New Utah Fire Threatens Homes and Hikers

A new Utah wildfire, the Quail Fire, began Tuesday afternoon in the foothills above Alpine, Utah, a wealthy suburb 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. Authorities promptly evacuated two subdivisions and are in the process of evacuating hikers and campers in American Fork Canyon. Draper City, an area immediately to the north of the fire, has warned some residents in the SunCrest subdivision to prepare for a possible evacuation if the fire moves in that direction.

Governor Gary Herbert has ordered the Air National Guard to assist with fire suppression efforts. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
