155 lb. therapy dog swims into hearts of cancer patients

So what has your dog done lately? If your dog is 4-year-old Quinn, a 155-pound Leonberger, he has roamed the halls of Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center bringing joy and hope to people facing devastating diagnoses, swam alongside Olympians, and raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.
When he isn’t working, you may be able to find him swimming in a nearby lake or pond. At first glance, Quinn may not look like a canine built for water events; however his breed is known for their swimming prowess because of their uniquely webbed feet.
“We keep him on a long leash when he’s in the water, otherwise we’d never get him out,” said Peggy Walker, Quinn’s owner and handler.
This over-achieving pooch has been working as a therapy dog at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center since he was 14-months-old.
“The patients here just love him,” said Linda Marler, director of the service animal training program at Baylor Health Care System. “They are sometimes startled by how big he is, but are won over by his sweet disposition. He has a great calming effect on the patients he visits.”
Quinn has found a way to marry his love of the water and helping others. Last year, Quinn raised more than $4,000 in one week for Swim Across America’s inaugural open water swim at Lake Ray Hubbard outside of Dallas through his personal fundraising page. Swim Across America is a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swim events that feature local swimmers and former Olympic swimmers.
The monies raised by Quinn and the other 224 swimmers who participated in the Dallas open water swim, of which 13 were former Olympians, went to help fund the new Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. Many of Quinn’s donors were people who own Leonbergers or who were fans of the breed, as well as people who saw him at the hospital.
“It goes to show the impact you can make just by doing something small like Peggy did by putting up a fundraising page online for Quinn,” said Jeanne Cunningham, co-chair of the Dallas SAA event. “We’re thrilled to have Quinn back this year to participate in the event; it’s quite a site when he leaps into the water.”
Seeing Quinn at events brings a special smile to event organizers and volunteers like April Samuels, who is also a former patient at the Baylor Sammons Cancer Center.
“When you’re in the hospital for treatment, it can be a very daunting experience,” said Samuels. “But seeing Quinn is such a joy knowing what he’s doing to raise money for potentially life-saving research that I may benefit from one day.”
Swim Across America will host its second annual open water swim event on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas. Quinn will once again be the event’s only canine participant.
“We’re just glad he can use his love of swimming to raise money for such a worthy cause.” Walker said.

America Forgets Competition is Key to Middle-Class Success

Yes, America has forgotten what made it the greatest nation on earth; a competitive business model which produced low priced, innovative products sold worldwide, which in turn created sustainable jobs for the middle-class American driving economic success. Our future as a nation should be based on the ability for modern workforce to produce goods and services which fuel demand worldwide, building long-term market liquidity, and socio-economic benefits which resonate, not in America, but all industrial countries interested in generational socio-economic stability.

In an election year where candidates deliver teleprompter generated speeches based on the latest polls and special interest group rants; their focus never seems to truly address the root problem of our nation and its weakened economic model. That focus is learning from history where monopolies and duopolies were common place leading to eventual legislation to curb competitive abuses and market dominance, of left unchecked, undermined the very back-bone of our economy; the middle-class worker.

Too long, have I been inundated with propaganda from politicians extoling the virtues of their party, supplanting job creation for an idealism of religious fervor and big business virtues, while leading middle-class Americans to believe in fear of those with opposing views, engulfing their party followers in mind-numbing media blitzes of we know best; follow us to the golden gate of Pandora. How can voters so misled in propaganda-ism, that following leaders into the abyss of denial and misfortune is good for them or our economy? Ironically, these political juggernauts have supported the elimination of competitive forces, which without any doubt, undermined and destroyed the very jobs their constituents needed to be successful and productive citizens that inevitably leads to U.S. economic growth and success. While singing the praises of political nominees the party leaders painted a picture of future, a safe and economically successful America, while demonizing any opposing thought or idea. Behind the scenes, a troubling picture of big business mergers, job loss, and the trickle-down theory was prevalent, all the while undermining the very constituents they sought as supporters and electors of their party picks.

Voter polarization is at an all-time high; the haves and have-nots continue to grow with impeachable austerity. No one seems to recognize the importance of the vibrant and stabilizing effect of competition through smaller, scaled-downed companies can have on economic success for future generations. We have continued to allow misguided company mergers and acquisitions on an enormous scale, ones that are detrimental to jobs and economic recovery. As these mergers, or more recently, marketing agreements which promote synergies guised as technology improvements permeate the business landscape, the middle-class American continues to suffer through lackluster job creation. Until elected political leaders are willing to address the abuses of Wall Street; scale down enormous companies that are (too big to fail), and destroy economic value with decreased competition, voters should treat our congress and senate as revolving doors. They should send a signal to legislators who do nothing, and oust them, while those willing to address real economic problems for the middle-class are supported. The two-party gridlock which has permeated Washington too long must be changed. Jobs and spending at home are the keys to a balanced budget. Misdirected Anger

I work in public health, so perhaps it's just me, but I don't understand all the anger directed at Jamie's references to diabetes. Yes, it would be best to differentiate when one is talking about Type 2 vs Type 1 Diabetes, but honestly if you have any knowledge about either disease at all you know which one he is discussing. Also, it's not just him. Headlines around the globe often highlight obesity and links to type 2 diabetes without actually stating the "type 2" part (the distinction is often buried within the article). My father has Type 1 Diabetes and I would never take offense to the fact that some people unfamiliar with the disease would mistake it for type 2. I see misunderstanding as an opportunity to educate the greater public on the differences between the two. It's unfortunate that they are so similarly named, but Jamie is not the villain here. He should be celebrated for having such a noble agenda not vilified for neglecting to explain the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes each and every time he speaks. I am quite certain he is aware of the distinction, but type 2 Diabetes is often the one that comes to mind most immediately for the general public.

I feel badly that children in school are singled out because of their battle with juvenile diabetes, but this is something that should be handled by the adults in the room and seized as an opportunity to educate those who are ignorant of the differences (not to mention an opportunity to put a bully in his/her place).

I recently read a study that 49% of Americans aren’t saving any money toward their retirement.

That’s not shocking at all when you consider a U.S. Census in December revealed that 48% percent of Americans are considered poor or low income.

Given these circumstances, I think it’s wise that half of Americans aren't saving for retirement when they are struggling to get by day to day and paycheck to paycheck.

What happened to justice and fight for your rights?.. Zimmerman would of never had those cuts and bruises if he wouldn't had went after Martin. Some people might think that Zimmerman is innocent. Well I thinks not, how can you compare a dead 17 year old to a 28 year old with a gun. You just can't, if he didn't want all this court drama, he should of never shot an innocent boy. What can you possible do with an Arizona drink and a bag of skittles. Nothing. George Zimmerman is a murder, as we recall the 911 phone call, the operator told Zimmerman not to go after him, but he refused and killed Trayvon Martin. All of this is on him, he should of left him alone until the "real official" cops came, everything would be alright. Zimmerman needs to wake up and smell reality, he's guilty and everyone knows it, so stop trying to say he's innocent. Now, put it like this all those murders out there and in jail should have never been in trouble because they could have said,"I was self-defending myself!" So, now Zimmerman is guilty!!!!

Position on BPA in canned goods?

How do you feel about the use of BPA in the lining of canned goods? As a family, we try to buy fresh and use the "Dirty Dozen" as a guide for when to purchase organic (from the EWG). However, we do buy canned goods (beans, sauces, etc). Should we eliminate these purchases?

Zimmerman medical report

Well it turns out there is documented proof of physical injuries to Zimmerman. They also released that Trayvon had bruised knuckles. Of course this again bolsters Zimmerman's account of what happened that night. Zimmermans' injuries were consistent with someone hitting him in the face and hitting his head on the ground. Doesn't sound like a winning position? The more that come out on this makes it look more like Zimmerman was a victim of an attack. I know I couldn't find him guilty from all that I have read so far.

My USII class watches CNN Student News on a daily basis. We got together with Mr. Patricia's radio/tv/digital media shop here at our school and they filmed my history students doing an intro to CNN Student News. The students worked extremely hard on planning the "movie theater" theme for the intro as well as all of the filming and editing that took place. We also submitted a press release to the newspaper letting them know we were filming an I-Report. We hope you air our video on CNN Student News, it would truly mean a great deal to them. While the vast majority of Americans are actually somewhere between the two extremes the two major political parties are doing their best to divide this nation by appealing to their most extreme members. By doing so and refusing to even consider the concept of finding some common ground to stand on they are involved in a battle that no one will win. Although I don't really think that it will lead to a conflict similar to the Hatfields and McCoys ( or at least I hope it doesn't) the lack of civility, maturity and in some cases sanity does make it an appropriate metaphor.

The new Halfsies project is underway at restaurants across America, in which people can ask for half a serving of a meal at participating restaurants and have the cost of the other half donated to charity. Of course, it's always a good time to talk about food, food addictions, obesity, self-love and self-loathing. I'll be honest, I have a food addiction, but I've been able to get it under control through a whole battery of strategies, because that's what it takes to defeat the silent addiction of over eating. Weight watchers was definitely part of the program. I went for a year or so, and it made me much more aware of what I eat, when I eat and why I eat. It led to our going vegetarian more than five years ago. It's not a moral decision to be vegetarian, although when I'm feeling particularly self-righteous, I will say, "no thank you, I don't eat anything with a face." Burgers look great to me, they smell great, and I know I'd faint from the enjoyment of eating one...the thing is, we have too many choices of what to eat in this society, so deciding to go vegetarian was one of those self-imposed limits...it's like I eat this, but I don't eat that..limiting myself to vegetable sources has given me some sense of control, and I did lose about 15 pounds that hasn't come back in a half decade. Being a food addict is not unlike being an alcoholic, once you are one, you are always one and you must be vigilant about staying with what works, otherwise you will lose all your gains and your good health. Sorry to have to break the bad news, but it's time to wake up to this very serious problem that afflicts us, time to wake up and do something about it. Hey, I like that. Time to declare what I'll do about my food addictions. I'll drink twice as much water as I usually do. How about you? Are you ready to take a stand against obesity? I'm W J O'Reilly and that's definitely something to think about.

Why Aren't African Americans Supporting the Occupy Movement?

I was inspired to create this video blog after hearing about the experience of an African American Occupy Richmond member being harassed by police after a rally for Women's Rights in Richmond, VA. His experience made me curious about the African American Occupy Wall Street experience. I have attended several Occupy Richmond events and although a majority of the attendants were white, I felt that their core principles were worth rallying around. While researching, I found that blacks only make up about 1.2% of those involved in Occupy Wall Street. I asked myself, "Why aren't blacks occupying?" I attempt to answer that question throughout the video. There are two movements related to Occupy Wall Street that have a substantial African American following and that is Occupy The Hood and Occupy The Dream. During the series, I explore those two movements along with Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Richmond. I also examine the Tea Party and compare and contrast their movement with Occupy Wall Street. While putting the project together I kept being reminded of the American Revolution. Throughout the video I talk about things we can do as "Americans" to liberate ourselves from big government and Wall Street.
