How Many "Isolated" Tea Party Incidents Will it Take?

Yesterday's Tea Party protest on Capitol Hill turned into the ugly bigotry and intimidation that the Tea Party is becoming known for.

Civil rights Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) and fellow Congressional Black Caucus member Andre Carson (D-IN) related how a large crowd of protesters screamed at them "kill the bill"... and punctuated their chants with the word "n!@@#r." That wasn't the only incident of the day. As Barney Frank rounded the corner toward the exit, wading through a huge crowd of tea partiers and other health care protesters, an elderly white man screamed "Barney you f@**%t", causing dozens in the crowd to erupt in laughter.

How many "isolated" incidents will it take before the Tea Party will have the conviction to police their own? Republican leaders and Tea Party officials publicly denounce the behavior, but this is a recurring theme. The picture for this iReport was taken at a Tea Party that I personally attended, and there was the shouting of "kill him!" (referring to President Obama) during another Tea Party rally. Denying the extensive existence of bigotry among the Tea Party can only be done by those who are secretly bigots themselves.

If the Tea Party was truly opposed to the hate being spewed at their rallies then they would do something to stop it. Instead their silence speaks volumes. "I agree" their lack of protest declares.

Health Care Reform- A Test for America- Will We Pass?

Many Americans oppose health care reform. It's a question of the "Spirit of the Bill" verses "The Letter of the Bill". Those that favor reform find what's good in the bill. Those that oppose it, find what's missing or what they believe it will take from them.

One of the most recent comments on a post I did on health care reform where I asked people why they would stand by and oppose the 30 million uninsured people from getting insurance, took my breath away.

The comment suggested that death was inevitable and there was nothing we could do to help the 30 million without taking away the freedom of the 300 million that already had insurance.

That this reform would take away money from the 300 million that they needed, that they had worked for, and that was wrong. It wasn't freedom like this country was supposed to represent.

Is this what freedom represents? Freedom to turn a blind eye to other fellow Americans that have been dropped by insurance companies? Freedom to ignore those that have pre-existing conditions and can not get health care insurance? Is this the freedom that we have fought wars over? That many Americans have died over?

Abraham once asked God if he would spare Sodom and Gomorrah if 10 good and righteous men could be found in those cities. God said he would spare those cities if ten good men could be found.

Can ten good men now be found in America? Has this Depression turned 50% of this country into those that would step over those injured on the floor on their way to the exit of the burning theatre?

I believe this Health Care Reform Bill is a test of what we represent to the world as a people and as America. Are we the country we proclaim to be in the eyes of the world , the shining light?

Or have we become Sodom and Gomorrah, not worth saving? Sunday will tell the future of this country.

If we fail to pass this important protection of our rights this Sunday, we will diminish and go the way of all once great powers for we will have failed to learn from history's examples of societies that forgot why they were great in caring for all their people.

GIANT OBAMA YOU LIE SIGN IN LAGRANGE GA

On my way home this evening I noticed a HUGE OBAMA YOU LIE SIGN suspended from a crane. I find this disrespectful of the President and to citizens having to drive by this eyesore. And what I think is even worse, is the fact that this sign is less than a mile from the Troup County Sherriffs Office and The Georgia State Patrol Office. I know that this is I guess, some sort of freedom of speech crap. But I think in this instance its just rude as well as a safety hazard and eyesore.

Part II YARROW: The Wound Healer

Yarrow is probably best known for its medicinal uses. These were documented almost 2000 years ago by Greek authors, and even earlier by the Chinese. Its Latin name (Achillea millefolium) gives us a clue to its uses in those earlier times. Achilles, according to Greek legend, was taught by Chiron the centaur about the virtues of Yarrow. He was told to use the Yarrow in a salve to heal wounds inflicted during the siege of Troy. Others claim that the name refers to a Greek Doctor called Achilles, who it is said, cured a seriously wounded warrior called Teleph with Yarrow. Meanwhile the Chippewa, a North American Indian tribe, felt that such knowledge had come from the Bear, a creature of Power, received through dreams. Despite the diversity of opinion as to the origin of the knowledge, Yarrow was used in similar ways by many different peoples.

Many of Yarrow's common names point out its ability to slow bleeding, taken either internally in the form of a decoction (tea), or externally as a wash or in poultice form. Such names are Woundwort, Bloodwort, Knight's Milfoil, Herba Militaris, and Staunchweed. Research shows that an alkaloid contained in the plant reduces the clotting time of blood in rabbits, the action lasting about 45 minutes. Other research (including Chinese) affirms its ability to act as an antiseptic which kills germs, as an aid in closing wounds and cuts (tannin being present), and as a local anesthetic or painkiller.

Because of its ability to act as a local anesthetic, the Zuni Indians of New Mexico would chew one or more (up to 13) of the feathery leaves, spitting them out after chewing them. This was said to relieve a toothache by numbing the mouth, and by so doing it helped to prepare the tooth for extraction. The Winnebagos used an infusion of the leaves to cure earaches by pouring the liquid into the ear. The Thompson Indians of B.C. powdered the roasted leaves and used them on skin sores to hasten healing.

The Russians currently use Yarrow in decoctions and extracts for stomach sickness, especially for ulcers, for both bleeding and gastritis, and externally as a styptic put on small cuts to stop bleeding. The modern Chinese use it much the same way. They consider it an excellent carminative (expelling gas from stomach and intestines), a good general stomach tonic, a satisfactory preparation for reducing inflammation, and a useful antiseptic.

Next to slowing of bleeding, Yarrow's second best known medicinal property is its ability to reduce fevers. When taken in tea form it causes the pores of the skin to dilate and produce copious sweating. This is said to be helpful in the early stages of colds, chills, and fevers, as well as in children's diseases such as measles. Many North American Indians (Utes, Winnebagos, Meskwakis, Montagnais, Micmac, Pillager Ojibwas) used Yarrow for bringing down fevers. The Ojibwas also used it as a fumigant.

Yarrow as also been used as an anti-spasmodic, calming nervous and muscular spasms. It was used as a wash to ease the discomfort of hemorrhoids, and as a cooling, soothing treatment for burns due to the presence of a chemical called 'Cineol' or 'Oil of Yarrow'. It has been recommended by herbalists for flatulence, gallbladder, and liver problems, excessive menstrual flow, and as a douche for leucorrhea (recommended by Culpeper in the 16th century). It has even been used as a shampoo to 'cure' baldness.

In her book, The Illustrated Herbal, Philippa Back suggests a practical and easy way to use fresh yarrow as a skin conditioner, while enjoying a soothing and relaxing soak in the bathtub. She says:

"Make a strong infusion by pouring 2 cups of boiling water over 3-4 handfuls of the herb. Leave it to infuse for 15-20 minutes then strain and add to the bath water. The addition of a highly perfumed herb such as lavender will make it more fragrant and increase the pleasure of the bath."

Yarrow has been carefully analyzed and found to contain two active alkaloids (achillein and moschatin), tannins, a blue-green essential oil (Up to 0.5% of the plant) with azulens and cineole content, a bitter principal, achileine, aconite acid, resin, insulin (a complex sugar), asparagine, gum, acetic and malic acids, silicic acid, and an exceptional quantity of potassium and sulphur.

As a final note. You should be aware that over-use of Yarrow as a tea or wash may result in a skin rash (dermatitis), causing the skin to be light-sensitive. Nursing mothers should know that cattle fed on Yarrow produce milk that is unpleasant in taste. Moderation seems to be the key.

Moorhead Flood 3/20/10

I took these photos today 3/20/10 in Moorhead, Minnesota. The photos were taken downtown near the Center Mall which is right on the Red River.

1) Photo of Dennis Walaker the mayor of Fargo being interviewed right by the Red River.

2) The Main Avenue Bridge between Fargo and Moorhead. The river water is now right up to the bottom of the bridge.

3) The multi- level parking lot for the Moorhead Center Mall is starting to have water right inside the west side of the lower level.

4) One of the new flood fighting tools is the Aqua Fence that has been positioned at the end of the lower-level parking ramp. The designer of the Aqua Fence is in Moorhead to make sure that the fences are put up properly and to monitor how they are working. The fence in this area is holding very well.

5) The same area of the Moorhead Center Mall parking lot on the west side. The sandbag dike is leaking all kinds of water, but the Aqua Fence is holding strong.

6) Taken from 1st Avenue North in Moorhead, this picture shows the back- up of ice flows in the Red River because the river has to go around Romkey park.

As a vote approaches on Obama and Pelosi’s government takeover of healthcare, Code Red is now considering two supposedly “undecided” California Democrats, Dennis Cardoza and Jim Costa, to now be “yes” votes.

The U.S. Department of Interior announced yesterday that it is increasing water allocations for the Central Valley of California, a region that depends on these water allocations to support local agriculture and jobs. The region has recently been starved for water and as a result unemployment has soared.: Not surprisingly, Cardoza and Costa had a hand in the announcement
