The movement has staged protests across the country over the past few months, to highlight, amongst other things, corporate greed and economic inequality. This weekend, riot police descended on Occupy camps, in cities including Oakland, Washington and New York. Saying they were tasked with restoring order to city centers and putting an end to the protest movement that began back in September. Police were deployed en masse throughout the weekend in cities where the Occupy protests have been the largest and most vocal. There are various pieces of amateur video footage circulating online, showing security forces arresting hundreds of people, sending out a strong message to protesters. Then and Now - Truth or Fantasy?

My Mom forwarded an email to me today which I have seen many times over the years. But for some reason this evening it got me to thinking, how close to reality are the scenarios laid out in the email?

The email compares a number of scenes as the scenes would have played out in yesterday and how the same scenarios would play out in today's society.

You be the judge.

How much is wishful thining and how much is too close to reality?

Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack...

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2011 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2011 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not sit still in class, he disrupts other students.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2011 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman..
2011 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2011 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2011 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.
2011 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated.   Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2011 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

So what is your opinion?

Before anyone misinterprets I am in no way advocating child abuse in any of these scenarios.

From the Cornfield, I hope this makes whoever reads think and question whether yesterday was too idyllic or if today is too over-reactive.

Second protest against the corruption of politicians in Slovakia

Today was the second round of protests against corruption in Slovak politics.
Protesters gathered not only in the capital of Slovakia, but also in 7 other cities. There were aproximately 15.000 - 20.000 people protesting in Bratislava and another 15.000 spread over the 7 cities.
Fist part of the protests at the SNP square went peacefull but as neonazis joined, they started to throw mega-firecrackers and flares into the Government Offices front yard, where the police was waiting. As the organizers didnt manage to calm down the crowds temper they called it off but nobody listened.
Several neonazis took a route to Parliament building after the end of the protest. When they arrived they got throught the baricades and threw bricks on the Parliament. Police used water cannons to end it. The temperature at that time was -10 celsius so water immediatelly froze.
3 police officers were injured.

Remembering my Mother

My mother, Josephine Bogie Thomas, was born in a small town in Kentucky, Mt. Sterling. Little did she know, that her life, and death, would serve a purpose that would live on long after she she was gone. You see, she was diagnosed with a genetic disease called Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH) in 1982. HH is also called iron overload disease. Toxic levels of iron is stored in the body and eventually kill the patient unless treated. We had never heard of it, but we soon learned that it was a potentially fatal disease with an "ancient" treatment (bloodletting) but that with aggressive treatment, the patient can be saved. In my mother's case, the diagnosis was a late stage one, but after a year of bloodlettings, my mother survived for another 16 quality years. Unfortunately, in the end, though, hemochromatosis still killed her. As a result of her diagnosis and her passion for helping others, I founded the American Hemochromatosis Society (AHS) (www.americanhs.org), in 1998. One year later, I would lose my mother to this common, but little known, condition. Since her diagnosis, and especially since her death, I have worked to keep her memory alive through pubilc awareness and my "quest to test America" for hemochromatosis. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, patients can live a full life span. Testing is simple and relatively inexpensive, the only thing truly missing is public awareness. I would like to remember my mother, her courage and braverly through her illness, and especially recall her kindness and generosity towards others. I am submitting this story for Nancy Grace's family album.

The Cornfield View: The Nevada Caucus

Eyes and ears political junkies and gluttons for misery, tomorrow is the Nevada Caucus. That's right voters will be back to the polls and letting the Republican Party know just who they want to face President Barack Obama this fall.

The Nevada Caucus is worth 28 delegates, divided proportionally according to the statewide vote.

As most caucuses work, you do not do a direct vote for a candidate like primaries. The caucus has 3 levels: The precinct, the county convention and finally the state convention.

Nevada Precinct Caucuses
This is where any registered voter can participate. The precinct voting is a very informal proceeding. It starts with the voters gathered into preference groups for each candidate. A simple head count is taken for each precinct. It takes a minimum of 15 percent in each precinct for a candidate to be viable. If a candidate's preference group is not viable, they can choose to caucus with another group (pick another candidate), or be uncommitted. There is time for each viable candidate's group to try to talk the unviable candidates voters into choosing their candidate. This is way many times a candidate will seem to have not received any votes, though the actually may have originally. Each precinct then elects a representative (delegate) to move on to the county convention.

Nevada County Convention
Delegates to the county convention were then selected amongst the candidate groups. A similar process occurred at the county convention. Although they file statements of support for their chosen candidate, all delegates are technically unbound until the state convention, otherwise the may change their vote. In some cases the candidate originally chosen may have dropped out of the race.

Nevada State Convention
There is no formal system of allocating delegates to presidential candidates at the state convention for the Republicans.

Now that we have a better understanding of how the system will work tomorrow and over the next few weeks, remember, the delegates won't be handed out tomorrow. We can try and take what we've been seeing in the polls and in the news to make some predictions on tomorrow's outcome.

With a caucus system, you have to remember that organization can mean everything. Only two of the candidates, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Dr. Ron Paul, have had and built active organizations in the state.

Nevada is also a very strong Tea Party state...although the movement seems to be rather splintered at this time. Sharron Angle nearly toppled Senator Harry Reid (a Mormon by the way) in 2010. Angle came out today in support of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. Having her support and those of her backers could play very well for Santorum.

Here is how I see the vote going tomorrow by the numbers:

#1 Romney - 40% or more

#2 Paul - 20-25%

#3 Santorum - 18-20%

#4 Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich - 15-17%

Yes, I am even throwing in percentages this time around.

Of course I could be completely lost as I try to peer through my crystal ball pushing away the withering corn stalks.

From the Cornfield, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

We'll know Saturday evening how close I've come to reality.
