A DAY IN A SLUM - INVESTIGATING INSIDE GHANA'S BIGGEST SLUM AS CHOLERA OUTBREAKS HITS GHANA

This is Sodom and Gomorrah the largest slum in Ghana. It is located in the heart of the capital Accra also known as “old fadama” around the “Agbobloshie” market in the central business district.

I was urged by the recent outbreaks of cholera in Accra and its surroundings to report and tell the untold stories and the plight of people living in slums coupled with the brutal dirty conditions of the area as one of the places where the cholera outbreak is coming from.
Cholera is one of the unpleasant diseases Ghanaians, wouldn’t want to come across, yet our surroundings still remains dirty. No one would want to be infected by this dreadful disease that has become a pandemic in this country in 2011 and most recently with some recorded deaths.
Following the cholera outbreak with an eagle’s eyes, just to try to figure out something right. Especially to investigate exactly where the pandemic came from, its causes as well as places it is making waves in the country and possibly ways to manage and prevent further outbreaks of cholera in Ghana.
According to the Ghana Health Service, more than 5,000 cases of cholera outbreak have been recorded so far in the various health facilities in the country, with close to 69 deaths already recorded and may be still counting if swift measures are not taken to remedy the situation.
Extra urgent attentions must be must be given to the cholera outbreak by the Government and the various stakeholders in the health sector including non-governmental organizations. (NGO). Though the Government has done immensely well and has so far committed GHC 5,000,000 (million) into the fight and management of the pandemic.
One may be sitting in the cleanest place of the city and still may be knocked down by cholera. Because flies and other flying insects may carry the cholera bacterium or diseases from one place to another, thereby spreading the disease anywhere, “All cannot be safe anymore, and then all will be at risk, no matter where you live in the city or even at the cleanest environment.”
Not too much attention was given to the the slums in the country especially “Sodom and Gomorrah” (located at Old Fadama Accra, Ghana’s capital city) by the country’s media divide as we seek explore the causes of cholera in Ghana for a solution to be found
. “One may wonder why the name Sodom and Gomorrah in the 21 century, yes, it exists in Ghana in a different way”.
On 15 April, 2011, we took an exclusive investigate tour of the much acclaimed BIGGEST SLUM in Ghana “Sodom and Gomorrah” or Old Fadama.
The Slum, popularly known as “Sodom and Gomorrah”, is located in the heart of the city of Accra’s central business district, in the busy Market area of “Agbogbloshi”. It is few meters away from the “Abosay Okai Central Mosque”, and not too far from the “International Central Gospel Church (ICGC)”, all houses of The Proclaimed Most High God.
As soon as one enters the slum, he or she was received and greeted by bad outdoors coupled with choked dug outs believed to be gutters, full of plastic, human and solid wastes of all kinds, just in front wooden structures (kiosk) they use as rooms. In fact there were stagnant water all over the area and tones of rubbish giving out stinking smells with flies all over the area.
What remains in my mind as I go through was to report myself to the nearest clinic for checkups as soon as I finished my work. I sucked all day whilst my stomach aches.
Just like me, the people living in the slum need serious medical attention, because “am 100 percent sure they are all ill and they don’t know it yet”.
Occupants of Sodom and Gomorrah do not have any good structures to be called rooms, let alone a house or home. They put up tiny wooden structures in form of rooms know as kiosks just to lay down their heads after a hard day’s work.
The kiosks ranges from small, medium, large and even wooden two-story structures all made with ply woods.
The area lacks all basic social amenities such as good drinking water,

Retractable Hypodermic Needle

Every year in the U.S. health care workers (HCW’s) suffer between 600,000 to one million injuries from conventional needles and sharps annually these exposures have led to Hepatitis B&C and HIV virus and at least 1,000 HCW’s are estimated to contact serious infections from needle sticks and sharp injuries. Some HCW’s have died. Needle sticks are preventable over 80 % of needle sticks in this country can be preventable with a safer Needle. Retractable Industries have made that safer needle. You can only use it once and when you do use it, it retracts in the cylinder, keeping it from puncturing the HCW.
Cost savings in the medical Industry can save over a million dollars per year. For follow-up testing, lost time, disability payments and of course the life in some cases the HCW. The cost alone for a high-risk exposure is almost $3,000 per needle stick even when no infection occurs. A safer needle only costs 28 cents more than a standard needle.
Sounds like a no Brainer right??? Think again
Three Big Hospital buying groups Premier Inc. Novation, and Becton, Dickinson& Company, which is based in Franklin Lakes N.J. being the largest that negotiates billions of dollars in supply contract for half the nations non-profit hospitals didn’t want the competition against their traditional needles, led to one of the biggest Anti-trust law suite. Becton and Dickinson Company didn’t want the competition, and they didn’t want another competitor in the market. Had nothing to do with the safety of the needle or even trying to protect our HCW’S. They were more concerned with their bottom line. This is the bigger company keeping a smaller company out of the free Market and dictating what could be sold. Well Retractable Industries did win their law suite.
In 2000 President Clinton one of his last actions was to sign into law the needle stick Safety & Prevention Act. The law urges health care employers to select safer needles devices, allows HCW’S to identify and in choosing needle devices and requires health care employer’s to maintain a log of sticks from contaminated needle sticks.
You would think that all the hospitals would do what ever they could to protect their nurses and to keep medical costs down.
Well think again.
You would think that everyone would want to share in the lowering of health care cost, because really the consumer are the ones that pick up the cost. You would think that we would want to protect our people to undue harm.

This is the title I used for my very first ireport dated June 15th 2011. It was the day that thousands of people demonstrated against the economic plan presented that day in the Hellenic parliament. This was the beginning of a political crisis for Greece unlike any other since the fall of Junta in 1974. For the past year the political system tried to cope with the current situation, however it was evident that a new era of coalitions was in order. For many Greeks including myself this past year has been a crash test for survival. I am one of the many people with higher education skills that had to relocate. EU countries for the past months provide a safe net with respect to employment and many Greeks have decided to follow this road. This is a difficult decision but at this moment this is the only way to be able to earn some money to survive and to save whatever property is left back in Greece. Heavy taxation is targeting the middle class and especially the home owners in a way that is uneven and unbearable. Entering the Eurozone was supposed to move us a step forward. Clearly those who have been responsible for planning the economic development of this country need to answer for the current situation, face the consequences and pay for their mistakes.

“Are you on Facebook?” a friend asks.
“No.” I respond.
“Why?”

The simple question evokes a flood of internal responses, from the rational to the emotional to the bizarre. To be honest, the real reason spans all of these ranges. However, rather than launch into a blathering rant and deluging them with a virulent brain dump, I simply shrug and say, “Meh.”

This usually spawns a retort about the wonders of social media and all the nifty things you can do and say, a kaleidoscope of possibilities where families or far flung friends can reconnect and share their lives and how I am hopelessly isolated without it. And it is this reaction that is one of the many reasons why I rebel at the prospect of opening my life up in such a way.

I value my privacy just as much as I value my friends and family. However, rather than share the details of my life with them in a virtual, pseudo-social way, interacting through a bland and emotionless computer, I instead will call them. I visit them. I send them photos they can actually post on their refrigerator rather than on some non-existent wall. I interact with them as a human and not some vague profile picture from High School that’s supposed to represent me.

Read the paper (If you can find one now adays) or watch the news and you will certainly hear about how the authorities caught some crook or some employer fired some philanderer because they posted their exploits on Facebook. Once upon a time, we used to worry about Big Brother invading our lives and quietly inserting themselves into our personal affairs, but here we are today, voluntarily opening our intimate and personal details up for all to see. Big Brother could not have asked for anything better than Facebook – a social experiment whereby all people are encouraged to share their lives and their minds with one another in a seemingly innocent and safe environment.

Don’t get me wrong, Facebook definitely has its merits and it has absolutely changed the way in which the world communicates with itself. It has provided an outlet for public discourse and direct influence for change that is unparalleled in all of human history. When used properly, it is a massive implement for good. But as we all know, most humans operate from a platform of at least mild self-interest and for as much potential good as it has, its potential for not-so-good is even greater.

So, perhaps the next time I am asked why I’m not on Facebook, I’ll simply answer “I don’t trust it and I have a phone.”

Acura, with its new 2012 TL sedan, kicked out all objections the brand had faced the previous years. This new TL version is improved in all its aspects including exterior styling, interior comfort, performance and fuel efficiency. Even though cargo space is limited, interior spacing of this car is well designed for improved comfort. Acura introduces the TL sedan in both front wheel and all wheel drive variants. The exterior of 2012 Acura TL is slightly refined than its predecessors. I felt that the new Acura is much improved in its styling and viewing. Acura's silver grille for this latest TL model is slightly reduced for installing a horizontal crease near the lower front bumper. Total front fascia seems to be vastly changed due to this grille redesign and a new headlamp introduction. The taillights as well as the turn-lights are new and refined for 2012 Acura TL. Standard options include the same 17 inch alloy wheels with all season tires. The wheel is seven spoke and an optional five spoke 19 inch wheel is also available for 2012 TL.

The interior of 2012 Acura TL is upgraded with modern equipments and quality leather materials. The Acura LCD screen has been upgraded along with much more elevated comfort options and a newly added heated or cooled front seats. But I could notice that the cargo volume cannot be increased, because the rear seat is not foldable and this is a major drawback I could find after my test drive. The new navigation system and technology package are improved and more costly than that of the last year TL.

For the 2012 version, Acura implanted two different engines for the TL breed. They are a 3.7 liter and a 3.5 liter, both of which are same as the previous year TL engines. Both the engines are V arranged and six cylindered and the former delivers 305 HP and latter 280 HP. The transmission system of 2012 Acura TL has improved to a six speed system with three options including six speed automatic, six speed manual and six speed auto-manual. Both of these engines should be fueled by premium gas alone, which too may be listed under the 'like don'ts' of 2012 Acura TL.

The fuel efficiency of 2012 Acura TL is rated by standard test drives as 20 mpg in city and 29 mpg on highway. Last year, TL had a rough five speed transmission, but now it is replaced by a new refined six speed one, which will help increase its fuel efficiency. Acura TL is now an all improved breed with increased comfort, style and refined performance. Price of 2012 Acura TL varies from $35,705 for the base standard version to $39,255 for the higher end version.

155 lb. therapy dog swims into hearts of cancer patients

So what has your dog done lately? If your dog is 4-year-old Quinn, a 155-pound Leonberger, he has roamed the halls of Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center bringing joy and hope to people facing devastating diagnoses, swam alongside Olympians, and raised thousands of dollars for cancer research.
When he isn’t working, you may be able to find him swimming in a nearby lake or pond. At first glance, Quinn may not look like a canine built for water events; however his breed is known for their swimming prowess because of their uniquely webbed feet.
“We keep him on a long leash when he’s in the water, otherwise we’d never get him out,” said Peggy Walker, Quinn’s owner and handler.
This over-achieving pooch has been working as a therapy dog at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center since he was 14-months-old.
“The patients here just love him,” said Linda Marler, director of the service animal training program at Baylor Health Care System. “They are sometimes startled by how big he is, but are won over by his sweet disposition. He has a great calming effect on the patients he visits.”
Quinn has found a way to marry his love of the water and helping others. Last year, Quinn raised more than $4,000 in one week for Swim Across America’s inaugural open water swim at Lake Ray Hubbard outside of Dallas through his personal fundraising page. Swim Across America is a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swim events that feature local swimmers and former Olympic swimmers.
The monies raised by Quinn and the other 224 swimmers who participated in the Dallas open water swim, of which 13 were former Olympians, went to help fund the new Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. Many of Quinn’s donors were people who own Leonbergers or who were fans of the breed, as well as people who saw him at the hospital.
“It goes to show the impact you can make just by doing something small like Peggy did by putting up a fundraising page online for Quinn,” said Jeanne Cunningham, co-chair of the Dallas SAA event. “We’re thrilled to have Quinn back this year to participate in the event; it’s quite a site when he leaps into the water.”
Seeing Quinn at events brings a special smile to event organizers and volunteers like April Samuels, who is also a former patient at the Baylor Sammons Cancer Center.
“When you’re in the hospital for treatment, it can be a very daunting experience,” said Samuels. “But seeing Quinn is such a joy knowing what he’s doing to raise money for potentially life-saving research that I may benefit from one day.”
Swim Across America will host its second annual open water swim event on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas. Quinn will once again be the event’s only canine participant.
“We’re just glad he can use his love of swimming to raise money for such a worthy cause.” Walker said.

The Catholic Church should be ashamed of itself. First off the Catholic church wrote the healthcare legislation to begin with. Google it, but make sure you go back to 2008 to 2010. Next they knew all along about the abortion language because ABORTION groups were fighting with the Catholic Church at the time for supporting Obamacare. Google it now they are outraged. No one @ CNN has gone back and done any research on the matter at all. Why were they so in favor of healthcare. Because it was going to pay them windfall profits at their 600 + hospitals across the US. So now they are all up in arms really about the contraceptive law. Why because of the same reason MONEY. If you're not having babies if the uninsured or people on the governments dole are not having babies especially they get less money. Especially if the person is uninsured because nothing in the law says that its going to cover the uninsured at the medicare rate. Currently, and Catholic Hospitals have already been sued for price gouging the uninsured, hospitals charge the uninsured at a higher rate because they haven't negotiated down the price. The problem is no one can tell you what the price is. Bush tried to get better pricing information but he went up against a wall of religious backlash on it because they are protecting their dollar. I don't believe that in non religous matters a religious company should have an advantage over a private company. So if you are competing in the private arena you should have no religious exclusion from obeying all private arena laws. What's next I don't obey your housing regulations because of God so I can build my house cheaper. To me, Facebook was made for people with big ego's and full of self-importance, who believe that other people really care about their daily lives.

All I've seen is people trying to out do each other by having the most 'friends", which are really people they know of, but can hardly be classified as a friend. Instead of the once a year "State of the Family" Christmas newsletter, or boring your guests with the photo album or movie slideshow of the family's last vacation, Facebook is just a perpetual year round equivalent of the same thing. I don't care to broadcast my life to the world, nor do I really care what other people do in theirs.

As a computer security analyst, I found that Facebook is a huge security risk. I've seen many accounts of people who had their home burglarized because they announce to everyone when they will be away on business or vacation. This has also lead to identity theft and scams, because all the information that anyone needs to steal your identity is provided in one place. This has also caused countless numbers of people lose their jobs because things about you and your activities are best kept to yourself and perhaps a few close trusted friends. Many, many people have been denied jobs because of Facebook.

The secondary reason I don't have a Facebook account is that its primary purpose is to data mine all your information to make money for the company. You are just allowed to use the site to post photo's and your private information in exchange for it. I noticed that every few months the Terms of Service is changed to give more access to your private information to Facebook. Only a small percentage of people are quick enough to change their profile to block them from gaining access to your information without any restrictions in its use.

It will take the totally clueless sheep years to realize what they have given up to be given the honor of posting on this site.

America Forgets Competition is Key to Middle-Class Success

Yes, America has forgotten what made it the greatest nation on earth; a competitive business model which produced low priced, innovative products sold worldwide, which in turn created sustainable jobs for the middle-class American driving economic success. Our future as a nation should be based on the ability for modern workforce to produce goods and services which fuel demand worldwide, building long-term market liquidity, and socio-economic benefits which resonate, not in America, but all industrial countries interested in generational socio-economic stability.

In an election year where candidates deliver teleprompter generated speeches based on the latest polls and special interest group rants; their focus never seems to truly address the root problem of our nation and its weakened economic model. That focus is learning from history where monopolies and duopolies were common place leading to eventual legislation to curb competitive abuses and market dominance, of left unchecked, undermined the very back-bone of our economy; the middle-class worker.

Too long, have I been inundated with propaganda from politicians extoling the virtues of their party, supplanting job creation for an idealism of religious fervor and big business virtues, while leading middle-class Americans to believe in fear of those with opposing views, engulfing their party followers in mind-numbing media blitzes of we know best; follow us to the golden gate of Pandora. How can voters so misled in propaganda-ism, that following leaders into the abyss of denial and misfortune is good for them or our economy? Ironically, these political juggernauts have supported the elimination of competitive forces, which without any doubt, undermined and destroyed the very jobs their constituents needed to be successful and productive citizens that inevitably leads to U.S. economic growth and success. While singing the praises of political nominees the party leaders painted a picture of future, a safe and economically successful America, while demonizing any opposing thought or idea. Behind the scenes, a troubling picture of big business mergers, job loss, and the trickle-down theory was prevalent, all the while undermining the very constituents they sought as supporters and electors of their party picks.

Voter polarization is at an all-time high; the haves and have-nots continue to grow with impeachable austerity. No one seems to recognize the importance of the vibrant and stabilizing effect of competition through smaller, scaled-downed companies can have on economic success for future generations. We have continued to allow misguided company mergers and acquisitions on an enormous scale, ones that are detrimental to jobs and economic recovery. As these mergers, or more recently, marketing agreements which promote synergies guised as technology improvements permeate the business landscape, the middle-class American continues to suffer through lackluster job creation. Until elected political leaders are willing to address the abuses of Wall Street; scale down enormous companies that are (too big to fail), and destroy economic value with decreased competition, voters should treat our congress and senate as revolving doors. They should send a signal to legislators who do nothing, and oust them, while those willing to address real economic problems for the middle-class are supported. The two-party gridlock which has permeated Washington too long must be changed. Jobs and spending at home are the keys to a balanced budget. superado esta fase, y ahora la moda son las agencias de Marketing de Contenido (Content

Marketing Agencies), que disponen ya incluso de una asociación: el Content Marketing Institute”:

explica: “La creación y distribución de contenido, o lo que en términos anglosajones de

denomina “content marketing” está viviendo actualmente una época dorada. Internet y la facilidad

con que podemos generar y hacer circular contenido de valor que “trabaje” en beneficio de

nuestra marca ha conseguido que miles de empresas de todo el mundo abracen con fuerza esta

modalidad. Esta disciplina se sostiene en saber escribir pensando en una audiencia potencial y

atraerlos desde los medios sociales hacia la web corporativa para convertirlos en fans”.

En tanto Marketingdirecto.com describe el tipo de contenidos que podemos generar y el giro hacia

aplicaciones móviles) con lo que los consumidores quieran participar. Son contenidos entretenidos,

que no interrumpen ni molestan a los usuarios.

“En los medios sociales se ha hecho muy evidente el poder de los contenidos patrocinados

para beneficiar a nuestra empresa a lo largo del tiempo.

Habrá que ser capaces de entender y crear contenido que correspondan con los términos y

punto clave de nuestro sector, las habilidades necesarias para entender nuestra industria, y para

comprender en qué se diferencia nuestra empresa de la competencia.

Sí, así es: el Centro de Estudios en Ciencias de la Comunicación incursiona por vez primera en el excitante mundo de las radionovelas. Sí, sabemos que muchos de ustedes se lo están preguntando: ¿Acaso leí bien? ¿En verdad están hablando de radionovelas? ¡¿Están locos?! La respuesta es: sí a todas las interrogantes anteriores.
El equipo de CECC RadioTV ha tenido desde hace muchos meses un sueño que no está dispuesto a postergar más: hacer emisiones de radio por Internet con contenido teatral. A la que pregunta que muchos nos han hecho sobre si es viable o no revivir un género por demás conocido pero al mismo tiempo en desuso, nosotros respondemos: sí, sí se puede y lo vamos a demostrar.
Para ello reunimos a un batallón un tanto creativo y otro tanto, demente; juntamos a voces talentosas con un experimentado equipo de producción y la suma de todo esto fue Y EN MEDIO DE NOSOTROS, MI MADRE COMO UN DIOS, un drama en 10 actos ambientado en un caótico México decimonónico que se estrenará esta semana.
¿Por qué? Porque se nos pegó la gana. Mientras unos tratan de reinventar una y otra vez el hilo negro, nosotros le apostamos a una radio breve, eficaz, efectiva y que difunda materiales de calidad y sobre todo QUE DIVIERTA.
Porque nosotros creemos que la CULTURA no necesariamente es aburrida y, menos aún, la que nosotros generamos.
