1) Why aren't you on Facebook?
> My wife and I no longer felt the need for it. It seemed to cause too many problems playing games, reading impersonal or truly irrelevant content, and just feeling like we really didn't need to participate in all that anymore. Human Disconnect.

2) How do people react when they find out you are not on Facebook?
> We have been off of Facebook for nearly a year now, and have never looked back. People seem to understand when we say we are not on anymore, and I am a tech crazy guy. Many of them are nearing the same things as us, or just not logging on very often anymore.

3) For better or worse, how has not being on Facebook impacted your relationships and social life with friends and family?
> BETTER. We just focus on connecting more with people face to face. We are not trying to keep up with hundreds of people who aren't really all close friends, some barely acquaintances, and we really don't feel a loss from not reading their countless new status updates every day. Freedom is the feeling, you become addicted to having to update your status, plant your crops, etc, and not having that has been so great.

Is it harder to keep in touch with people, or are your real-life relationships stronger for it?
> We feel like we have strengthened relationships with close friends and family that are truly important to us, and not concerned ourselves with the other hundreds of 'friends' that really aren't important.

The Sunflower Fire Continues to Grow

Northeast of Phoenix and above the small town of Sunflower, Arizona the Sunflower Fire grew to some 12,000 acres by Tuesday night. Smoke from the fire was carried high into the atmosphere by the same winds and heat that have made the blaze so difficult to fight.

Additionally, the fire has spread to rugged and remote terrain making it all the more difficult to fight.

The Sunflower Fire is just one of several burning throughout Arizona at this time. The Gladiator Fire near the town of Crown King has forced the evacuation of that town. Furthermore, firefighters are concerned that the fire could quickly encroach upon the city if the conditions on Wednesday and Thursday worsen.

Los protagonistas somos tres: Francisco, Carlos Fuentes y, un servidor. Fracisco y yo somos como Don Quijote y Sancho, algunas veces él el Sancho (la mayoría de las veces) y yo el Quijote... o simplemente dos curiosos del conocimiento. El es un futuro historiador, yo un futuro jurista, ambos influídos intelectualmente por el maestro de maestros, Carlos Fuentes.

Fue un día pésimo para los dos, fue la noche la que guardó el diamante. Llegamos entusiasmados desde las 11 de la mañana a Gandhi de Quevedo, la firma empezaba a las 7 y 8 de la noche, no lo recuerdo bien. Fuimos los primeros en llegar... comimos mal por ahí, tomamos un café no tan bueno y nos quedamos sin un centavo. Decidimos jugar ajedrez frente a la puerta del auditorio donde Carlos Fuentes estaría, nuestra tesis era toparlo y pedirle una colección de libros... sueños mezquinos. Jugamos un par de horas, no somos grandes jugadores, solamente intercambiamos malas jugadas, tan malas que se neutralizan entre sí. El intercambio de palabras es una ósmosis constante entre dos grandes amigos, sólo faltaba la pipa.

Empezaron a llegar las personas, nosotros, presumidos, petulantes, gozabamos de un lugar inesperado. Extraño fue no encontrar meas gente petulante como nosotros... así es, todas las personas estaban abajo, por instrucción del personal de Gandhi, nosotros no sabíamos hasta que llego un joven con singular alegría y nos madó hasta... pero hasta... atrás de una larga fila. La petulancia se fue. La estulticia siempre presente.

Se movía fila lentamente, quietos no estábamos. Al fin, después de conversar con una amable joven que seguramente se olvdó de nosotros más rápido que nosotros de ella (aceptándolo, no tenemos contacto social constante), llegamos con el maestro. Quiero resaltar el diálogo de Francisco... "blaaaaa blaaaaaaa kajsdhakdjh", miraba obstinado a Fuentes, y él sonreía y firmaba los libros... pasé yo, me temblaron mis manos, toda mi mente se esforzó por entablar con mi maestro el más grande diálogo jamás dialogado... en realidad... el intelecto de Fuentes superó mi estulticia... y me dijo:

"Debes ser novelista, tienes ojos de novelista"

Sonrió, no hay más que decir.

Conocí además a la Directora Editorial de Alfaguara, pero sería irme por la tangente.

Le prometí a Carlos Fuentes escribir, y el me prometió leerme.

Nos despedimos, subimos al metro y nos pensamos qué había ocurrido.

Years ago I joined the social media craze and started a Myspace page. That lasted for all of about a month. I ended the page after talking with my wife and listening to how she disagreed with it. She had a very poignant argument and with a little resistance from me, I agreed. We agreed that we would not have any personal social media site pages.

Fast Forward 6 years and now our marriage is stronger than ever and I know who my true friends are and we still have no social media sites to include Facebook. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with Facebook, but it is not for me.

When people find out I am not on Facebook there usually isn't a big reaction about. On the other hand when my wife often gets Facebook requests via e-mail and usually multiple times from people after she lets them know that she doesn't Facebook.

I can honestly say that my life is better since I do not have Facebook. I don't know where I will even find the time to check it if I had an account. The whole issue I now have with Facebook is the communication factor. What I mean by this is that it's not true communication, but many rely on it. Picture this, if I were in another state and sent you a message via Facebook and asked how you were doing, would you evtell me if there was anything wrong? On the flip side, if I called you and talked to you, I could more than likely tell by the tone in your voice if something was wrong. Even if you said "I'm doing ok". Your tone would tell on you. Of course, if we were face to face, that would be even better and I could see your facial expresions and body language as well. As you see, words are important, but they are only a small part of communication (less than 20%). When a person uses texting slang to communicate on Facebook, it only makes it that much more ineffective. To at least pick up the phone to call a person takes effort and shows them how important they are. I think it goes a long way.

The impact for me not having a Facebook account is that it keeps all of my relationship genuine. All of my friends are primarily people that i have met and or talked to on multiple occasions. It's interesting when you have people that have friends in Facebook that they have never met or even talked to on a phone before. It's nothing wrong with it, but are they really a friend? This has also impacted my marriage tremendously. I am able to devote most of my time to my family instead of Facebook. I also never have to explain why some stranger might be trying to make a Facebook connect with me.

This is just one man's take on Facebook, explaining how it is just not for him.

I was among the first generation of Facebook users and one of the very active ones who was the subject of conversations by my friends and colleagues for my transparency.

Almost 1.5 years ago, I suddenly stopped my Facebook and permanently removed my account. I had many reasons to do that but I count a few here.

Like any other social network, Facebook started to be flooded with ordinary people. When it was started, it was a good tool for me to stay in contact with exceptionally talented and successful people, but then ordinary people came. This is not a bad thing, but the problem starts when you realize that for most ordinary people, these social networks are more like a gossiping tool to extract information about others. Soon I noticed that there are some people with inactive accounts who keep checking my profile regularly and use the information to talk behind my back with others. In a few situations this caused problems.

Other than that, I learned that I'm spending a reasonable amount of time maintaining this account, while as a doctoral student I could use that time for many other things that are more productive. Facebook is a private network focused on non-technical information sharing, so my activities couldn't help my career (leave alone the potential for future employers to use minor details from there to cause problems for my employment). I do tweet frequently, but tweets are technical and it helps my networking and connections with others for career opportunities on the community.

Other than these factors, I found Facebook itself as changing frequently and becoming over-complex. What I had liked about earlier versions of Facebook was its simplicity that is lost recently.

All in one, I removed my account, and it was such a huge surprise for me that I never went back and felt that I gained too much time everyday for productive works.

As the bottom line, I'd like to address a point that some people mention when you say you have/had an active Facebook: they usually respond like "Then you shouldn't. Just have an account but don't put too much info there." Here this is against my philosophy in life that you have to acquire tools to use them, not to keep them useless. Facebook is designed (like any other tool) to be used for a purpose, and that purpose is not to have an inactive account to spy on your friends, and since I didn't want to use Facebook in the way it was supposed to be used, I decided to stop and remove my account.

Springtime, and the herons are now busy fishing after building their nests, a flurry of activity occurs at low tide, the inevitable battles between them, and the occasional and rare death by suffocation when they swallow fish that is too big for them. All this contribute to a show of survival.
I am fortunate enough to live near a Rookery, and can be the witness of their fishing skills. They are so engrossed in what they do that I can get quite close without disturbing them. These images are the result of many many hours of patiently waiting for the right moment. Enjoy!

Gladiator Fire in Arizona Continues To Burn

Day Three of the Gladiator fire in the Crown King area of Arizona continues to takes it toll, destroying over 1300 acres of land in Yavapai county.

Fire fighters continue to battle the blaze in extreme heat conditions and it is confirmed that one fire fighter suffered from heat exhaustion.

The fire has also threatened many homes and residents of the small town of Crown King and it is said that extremely dry conditions have help to fuel the flames.

There is no containment at this time although fire fighters hope to get more help from the national management team.

Dark Shadows Sucks Blood Comedy

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Team up again in this horror comedy from Warner Bros Pictures. The film is based on the TV soap opera from the 60's and 70's that was created by Dan Curtis.

We liked this movie more than we wanted to. Roberta and I are not fans of 'scary' movies or vampires, but this film is not that scary. But it was surprisingly funny - especially if you are a child of the 70's.

And it works well as period piece as well. Burton has the 70's down to a tee - from the lava lamps to the cars, from the hippies to the pot.

Mr Depp is excellent as the 200 year old vampire, who battles his nemesis, a witch that cursed him years ago. The character reminded me of his 'Edward Scissorhands' movie - also with Tim Burton.

The film could not overcome 'The Avengers' though - It made an OK $28.8M, but last weeks champ broke more records this weekend with $103M more.

Grade: B+

REVIEW

There is something special about Falling Skies and where we find Noah Wyle now in his career. There is a maturity , a wisdom that not only is present when you meet him but carries over into his work as Tom Mason, the single father fighting off aliens while trying to protect his three children on Falling Skies (TNT June 17^th). The show is unique in it’s structure as it picks up in the middle of the adventure in Season 1 rather than starting with the invasion itself – the aliens are here and the remaining insurgents of the human race are fighting for survival. It’s a risky move but one that shakes up the conventional science fiction narrative and allows for some heart felt drama amid the backdrop of gun fights and alien invaders. It is clearly the culmination of the entire science fiction television genre. Elements of Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Lost and District 9 abound but it is Noah Wyle and Colin Cunningham who stand out the most.

Wyle understands that he is the head of the cast and that mantle of responsibility is something he takes incredibly seriously and it has informed his work as Tom Mason in a subtle but not so unnoticed way. In fact his co-star Colin Cunningham gives Noah Wyle much of the credit for how well the cast works together and the level of depth and belief coming from their performances.

I will say the scenes where Noah and Colin get to play off each other are some of the most compelling and entertaining I’ve seen in series television in this genre and Colin Cunningham’s John Pope is every bit the scene stealer James Marsters was in Buffy as Spike. Though at times in Season 1 the narrative slows down a bit, the action picks up soon enough and from the look of Season 2 it appears the new show runner, Remi Aubuchon, is tightening up the tension even more.

I also got the chance to see their motion capture system at work. They set up a demo in a small room to show the technology though they actually shoot in a much larger space at Henson Studios in Hollywood. World renowned Martial Artist, TJ Storm performers the Overlord character and is a veteran to the world of motion capture having appeared in over 30 video games. He is also staring in the Lions Gate film “Black Cobra” due out on May 22^nd on DVD. Remi Aubuchon spoke highly of the motion capture cast and credits them and the onset puppeteers with adding an authenticity to the aliens that help propel the story forward and support the principle casts’ work.

Falling Skies Season Two premieres, appropriately, on Father’s Day, June 17^th on TNT.

Street Faire at Howard and Second Street in San Francisco went on a
frenetic pace after 7 P. M. Sunday evening.

Six different DJs mixed their own Trance, Techno, Electronica at various
locations in the festival for World Peace Through Technology Organization.
People were gyrating on the streets, others loaded with alcohol and other
substances climbed and danced on the stage. The aroma of Cannabis sativa
permeated the air.

The vendors for exotic clothing, jewelry, and other miscellaneous items
had a brisk sale.

A DEMOCRAT AGONIZES OVER GOING REPUBLICAN FOR RON PAUL!

I haven't yet voted in a caucus or a primary but I'm about to switch my party preference from Democrat to Republican just so I can vote for Ron Paul in the Presidential primary.

This is something I do not take lightly. My mother-a dyed-in-the-wool political activist & Democrat would not approve of this! But I attended the Ron Paul Town Hall meeting at the UCSD campus this past Friday, May 4th & I know in my heart that it is the right thing to do.

My son & I went up to the beautiful La Jolla campus because we wanted to see & hear for ourselves exactly what the Ron Paul Revolution is all about. My 18-year old is not particularly political but he once worked at the campus bookstore & wanted to say hi to some friends. I used that pretext to bring him along for some political enlightenment a la Ron Paul.

First of all, the eggheads & computer nerds that attend UCSD (not a diss, but a fact--I am an alumni of Muir College.) were all out in force at this function that took place on expansive Warren Mall. The San Diego Union/Tribune said that 3500 attended but the Youth for Ron Paul organizers who put the event together told me they estimated 6000 showed up.

Whatever the number, Ron Paul gave his standard one hour stump speech, speaking without notes. It was impressive to hear him speak in person & Paul noted that he has received a lot of support from college students & on campuses around the nation.

While my son & I got lost in his rant about the Federal Reserve and paper money, we did get that the USA should not be living beyond it's means & relying on deficit spending. Sound money just makes sense.

Paul got himself a large round of applause when he decried the DEA throwing a UCSD student into jail & then forgetting about him for 5 days! Shameful! I know that the campus has been traumatized by that action & additionally, the Texas doctor criticized the War on Drugs too! Amid admiring cries of "President Paul," he railed against the "the war on drugs (as) much more dangerous to our liberties than the drugs themselves."
As for medical marijuana, Ron Paul wants the feds to stop messing with what he calls "a state's rights issue." This is music to the ears of medical marijuana proponents such as myself, since we believe that the regulation of this herb is not something the federal government should be busying itself with.

I loved Ron Paul's stance on foreign policy. He is against war & wants to stop America from being the aggressor overseas. Paul declared that we alienate the world with our aggressive behavior & endorsed a foreign policy based on "not bombs & intimidation but friendship & trade." He said it's time to eliminate the sanctions against Cuba because "the Cold War is over."

In order to vote for this great patriot, I need to change my political party registration by late May since the California Presidential primary will only allow a selection of candidates from your party designation.

Not a problem. The Texas congressman,is the only Republican still challenging part-time La Jolla, beach-dwelling resident Mitt Romney--the expected GOP presidential nominee. Ron Paul was on a California tour that took him to UC Davis (near Sacramento) and Cal State Fullerton, (near Los Angeles) before his UC San Diego appearance.

Paul attracts a young, loyal, libertarian-oriented following. He has been termed our modern-day "bargain-basement Jefferson" by pundits who may not realize the depth of devotion many intelligent young people have towards the iconic Texan.

Even if he hasn't a chance of winning the Republican nomination, support & votes for him in the primary elections will cause the Republicans at their summer convention to defer to Paul. Perhaps some of the Ron Paul notions that many Republicans consider so audacious, like Paul's call to "End the Fed" & repeal the Federal Reserve Act might not make the platform. But his calls for peace & an end to a belligerent foreign policy should hopefully attract bipartisan support.

A hip, sexy mom breastfeeds her three year old on the cover of TIME while a Barack Obama, captioned, "America's First Gay President" holds the front page of NEWSWEEK. They aren't the first of the leading most controversial covers on American magazines--remember the naked John Lennon on ROLLING STONE, not to be confused with the naked Demi Moore on VANITY FAIR, or the naked Janet Jackson. The point is the print media in its death throes will do anything at any time to sell a few more books, and if that means sexualizing children, the big claim against the recent Time cover, or outright misrepresentation of fact, as the "Gay President Obama" they will do it, and we will look, and we will comment and we will buy these to satisfy something prurient within ourselves. But do get ready, because we're gonna be seeing everything sooner or later, because that's what it takes for us to subsidize a dying industry. Just sayin', it's something to think about. I'm W J O'Reilly.

So glad you asked...

I was once a friend of Facebook, you know the typical user logging a couple times a day, updating my status, taking a peek at what friends and family were up to and occasionally uploading a photo or video. I enjoyed connecting with friends I had not seen in years as well as looking at the "now and then" photos they posted.

I also enjoyed chatting with a friend once in a while or posting a birthday wish on a friends wall, just your average Facebook stuff. I created my account in 2008 and watched Facebook evolve over the next few years.
Before I knew it I had Facebook not only my desktop but on my iPad and cell phone, it was everywhere and everyone was on it!

I went from logging on a couple of times after work to more times than I could keep up with and in turn I started to see a lot more of what people were doing, the attitudes and sometimes tension amongst friends and family.

I've blocked, deleted people, apps and games more than once, yet I still managed to keep my FB up and running on a regular basis, why not? Everyone had caught on this great form of social connection, Wrong! or at least for me it was. The fun of Facebook had been turned into a venting medium for family bickering and face offs between friends. I was done, no more deleting and blocking (because people can still sometimes see your wall or reach you through another friend) my only alternative was to DEACTIVATE! And after going through Facebook's process of closing an account I hit the final "Are you sure you want to deactivate your account?" I hit yes and it was over. I can now say I have been deactivated for a month and it feels great! Although it was not easy at first but hey aren't all habits hard to break? Facebook can be great for some but a nightmare for others.

I now have to actually take the time to call my friends or email them which is not as convenient just clicking on Facebook but I'll get used to it and as for the scutiny I now get froms friends for not being on FB well I'm sure that will go away in time but for now I refuse to reactivate my Facebook, guess I just have to find more to do with my time.
