Yankees Victory Parade - the Bleacher Creatures

Several hundred thousand New York Yankees fans crowd lower Manhattan to get a glimpse of the victory parade for the 2009 World Series Champions, but many of them, including those featured in this video, could only get as close as a JumboTron displaying the parade down the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway.

Obama: Slight Fracture

Republicans are pointing to this past Tuesday’s gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia as evidence of the GOP’s ‘ascendancy’. Democrats are downplaying the losses as well as trumpeting a House victory in NY23- the first since the Civil War.

Contrary to the spin, the losses are not proof that the right-wing worm has turned and that the Obama Administration is now on a downward spiral to demise. The party of the governorship has traditionally flipped in opposition to the party of the President and exit polls showed that Obama is held in fairly high regard and was not a factor in voters’ decisions.

The flip side, of course, is that Obama did campaign heavily for Corzine and Deeds and failed to excite voters to turn out on their behalf. Whereas the defeats may not be attributed to Obama, he certainly didn’t propel the candidates to victory.

The fight for the vacant House seat in NY’s 23^rd District may illuminate future problems for both parties. The Republicans- bowing down in abeyance to the far-right, used Rovian dirty tricks to destroy their own moderate Dede Scozzafava, replacing her with Conservative Doug Hoffman. Instead of a Sarah Palin-endorsed victory, Democrat Bill Owens, took the race, with the help of Republican moderates and Independents. Bad news for Dems is that they greatly outnumber Republicans in the 23^rd, and didn’t show at the polls. Despite voter apathy, Owens won, but not as handily as he could have.

That same Democratic voter indifference was evident in New Jersey and Virginia, where the large turnouts that elected Barack Obama in 2008 were nowhere to be found in ’09.

The pitfall for the GOP in 2010 could be whether or not the internecine warfare among conservatives and moderates will have the latter group abandon the party, adding their voices and votes to the Democrats, while the problem awaiting Democrats may be crippling apathy, allowing the GOP to triumph unchallenged.

"Fringe " Best Show Since "X-Files"

The weekly Fox TV show, "Fringe", is the best thing since X-Files! It has great scripts, awesome plots plus great acting. When X-Files ended, I found myself wondering what was I supposed to watch that was crazy and weird?

Then I found "Fringe". J.J. Abrams, the show's producer, brings an embellishment to the show as he does with most of what he does. Chris Carter's X-Files was great, but Abrams takes this show "over the top."

The show has three main characters:

Olivia- the lead FBI Investigator who has budding psychic abilities.

Peter Bishop, the "director " that coordinates the investigations

Dr. Walter Bishop, Peter's Dr. Frankenstein father

The show raises many questions that draw you further into the plot.

Who is William Bell (played my Leonard Nimoy) ?

What's the big idea behind this?

What is Olivia's secret from her past?

Who is the observer?

Fox has a hit here. I find the show interesting and I enjoy a mystery. In "Fringe's case", it's an ongoing thriller. Highly recommended.

Revealing the mysteries of the migration route of the turtles

Wednesday afternoon was released the third ridley turtle with satellite transponder on the beaches of Los Cabos. The turtle was named AZTECA.

For the scientific community remains in a mystery migration of this species that reaches the coast of Baja California Sur to lay eggs.

The turtle group in the municipality of Los Cabos, with the sponsorship of hotel companies have placed a transmitter on the turtle Olive Ridley species, for satellite tracking it and know their migration route.

Graciela Tiburcio, local scientist head of this program promotes conservation and study of the turtle in Baja California Sur, as it is an endangered species.

This is the third turtle that is released with a satellite transmitter on this year. Scientists and any person who wants it can track next week the path of the turtle AZTECA in www.cabotortugas.org page or follow the link through the page www.colectivopericu.wordpress.com

From the eyes of an Army wife at FT Hood

(note: this photo is of a memorial less than one mile from my home. in time, i'm sure we'll have a memorial for this tragedy, too.)

What happened here yesterday was beyond belief.

I pulled in to the driveway of my on-post residence and put my toddler down for a nap. As soon as I shut his door and tiptoed across our squeaky wooden floors out to the living room, I heard the gates to our installation slam shut.

It's not a pleasant sound. It's the kind of sound you expect to hear when something or someone very bad is on the way.

A few minutes later, the first of the warning sirens came on over the post-wide PA system. Attention! Seek shelter immediately. Lock windows and doors. Turn off heat, ventilation, and A/C systems. I repeat, seek shelter immediately.

That was it. That was all we got.

I'm no fool; we live in a targeted place. Was it an attack? Was someone trying to get into the installation that shouldn't be here? Were they already here, and now it's damage control?

My husband was at work when he called me, and he spoke low and quickly. He told me to shut the curtains, get down, and not to go outside. My mind was racing just as fast as my heartbeat. He's an intelligence officer. What does he know that I don't? I asked him why. "There's a gunman on post. Maybe more. Stay away from the windows. Listen, they're in ACUs. Don't open the doors. I love you, I have to go."

Of course, I just assumed that whoever it was had simply purchased ACUs from any number of local surplus shops. I refused to believe it was one of our own.

As the day unfolded and misinformation gave way to facts, I finally let myself realize that it was one of our own. This man came into our house, walked like us, and talked like us. He killed my brothers.

This Army is my family. That man put a hole in it.

I'm dumbfounded. My husband just had a board meet to get promoted to Major. To think of every connotation that rank carries and what it takes to get there, and then to think of that gunman (I refuse to say his name, and I refuse to give him a rank he doesn't deserve), I'm sick.

I was on edge the entire day, peeking from behind my blue curtains to see outside. A friend of mine also stationed here at Fort Hood texted me and told me he was on standby. They were in full gear with guns on their backs, and they were conducting security sweeps. And even though I understood one of our soldiers had just opened fire on his own and there could be more out there, the thought of our Army made me safe. I knew then that everything would be okay, and all of my anxiety was gone.

I trust my life to those soldiers.

I always will.
